Through line: Drawn from Goulburn Regional Art Gallery's Collection
Goulburn Regional Art Gallery
31 jul. — 12 sep. 2026
Through line brings together key works acquired by Goulburn Regional Art Gallery over the past ten years. Spanning painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, audio-visual and installation, these acquisitions reflect a genuine breadth of artistic practice.
The Gallery over this period has actively engaged with artists who are energetic, bold and innovative. These are key contemporary practitioners working at the forefront of their disciplines: honing techniques, embracing new technologies and unconventional materials, and developing interactive and immersive artworks that reflect and respond to the world around them. Artists celebrated and widely exhibited nationally and internationally sit alongside strong emerging voices, all united by ambition and the Gallery's deep commitment to supporting living artists.
Across these practices run through lines, lineages and relationships. Some are forged deliberately through the Gallery's collecting vision: others are happily discovered only when artworks are brought together. Practices distinct in method, material, context and intent reveal themselves to share something deeper: a feeling, a way of seeing, an understanding of our place in the world. The natural world recurs as motif and metaphor, explored both explicitly and subtly as a vehicle for investigating memory, belonging and ecological concern.
Through line is an invitation to look and to linger. Moving through the exhibition you will find threads the Gallery has been quietly forging, work by work, across a decade. Connections made with equal measures of purpose and serendipity, and a collection tended with genuine care — curated by Yvette Dal Pozzo.
Artists featured: Emma Beer, Serena Bonson, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Dale Chihuly, Yvette Coppersmith, Elisabeth Cummings, Ham Darroch, Lorraine Daylight, Lynda Draper, Mikala Dwyer, Teelah George, Sammy Hawker, Ildiko Kovacs, Andrew Lavery, Guido Maestri, Ray Monde, Arlo Mountford, Tom Polo, Dionisia Salas, Alex Seton, Gemma Smith, Anyupa Stevens, Christian Thompson, Mrs Thompson, James Tylor, Justine Varga, John R Walker, Jodie Whalen, Diana Wood Conroy, Zoe Young
“Monochrome photographic works by James Tylor and Sammy Hawker reflect on the impact of colonisation on the landscape. Hawker’s photographic negatives of ecologically disturbed sites along the shoreline of Lake George were developed within honeybee hives, a reference to the Celtic tradition of ‘telling the bees’. Here, ghostly honeycomb obscures the image of a tree. The tree is echoed in John R Walker’s Scar (2025), part of a body of work that looks to trees as witnesses of the changes to country that have occurred over the past 200 years.”
